This is a wonderful example of a Shelby lamp. The squashed mushroom-shaped glass envelope is a distinctive characteristic of lamps produced by the Shelby company. It has similarly unique filament shape. Known as (I believe) "transverse oval", it has flat horizontal oval-shaped loops instead of the more elongated vertical shape. The reason- simple. To produce a more even light than that produced by hairpin or double-loop types, and especially to increase the portion of light that shines downward. I have a little more info about these lamps, and the Shelby company somewhere, I`ll post it all when I find it.

It is fitted with a brass bodied Thomson Houston base and probably dates from just before 1900, it wouldn`t have been much earlier as the base insulation is porcelain.
