This large and magnificent hand blown carbon lamp is probably the earliest lamp in my collection as it is today. Its manufacturer and exact age are unknown however the style of the base indicates it is probably from the late 1890s. It has white insulation that could be plaster but is probably an early use of porcelain as it seems a little hard to be plaster. The red coloured glass is lighter than many other red lamps (although it looks darker in this picture) and when lit, it glows with a bright and ever so slightly orangey red- however this doesn`t show up too well in the picture below. It has been suggested that it might have been intended as a photographic darkroom lamp.
