A117 precision projector lamp- the "Spaceman Lamp"

A117 precision projector lamp Voltage- 8v
Wattage-50w
Origin- UK
Notes- Shown here next to a small flashlight bulb for scale.

This odd looking lamp is a precision projector lamp. It has a special eliptical reflector and the projector`s optics is designed to work together with this reflector, although I have never seen a projector that takes one of these so can`t say exactly how it works.
Eliptical reflectors have 2 focal points, in this lamp the filament is positioned at one focal point. The other is actually outside the lamp just in front of the window, at that point the light is so concentrated that it is almost as if the filament were there as well. Shining it at a piece of paper at this focal point distance (less than 1 inch) will burn a hole in the paper much like a magnifying glass held in the sun. The chimney portion on top is there to collect evaporated tungsten and prevent it from blackening the silvered innards and window so it burns brighter for longer.
I believe these aren`t made any more but many are still around for those who have a projector that takes them. They show up on Ebay quite often.
